Sea Turtles: Equipped for the Ocean
There are only 7 species of sea turtles in the world! Sea turtles are fully aquatic reptiles that typically only come ashore to breed.
They have a very streamlined shell called a carapace that helps them maneuver through the ocean. Since they cannot retract their head and flippers in their carapace like terrestrial turtles, these expert swimmers rely on their speed and powerful jaws to evade predators.
The Cook Museum is home to a non-releasable Kemp’s ridley sea turtle named Kale! The Kemp’s ridley is the smallest species of sea turtle and is internationally listed as critically endangered.
Now in his forever home, Kale is loving life at the Cook Museum with plenty of enrichment, veterinary care, and all of his favorite foods – blue crab, lobster, and shrimp.
