Collecting and Observing Insects
Knowing what insect species are found around your area and where to collect them is a great place to start your collection. Having a trusty field guide with you when you’re out in nature is a great tool to use to quickly look up the insect you’ve found on the spot.
To keep up with the numerous different insect species, entomologists and hobbyists have invented a
myriad of tools and techniques for insect collecting.
Netting for insects is one of the most common forms of collection and is often used by Animal Care staff out in the field. A funnel net (or butterfly net) is lightweight and can be used to collect flying insects.
To collect night insects, Animal Care staff set up light traps where a light source is perched on top of a vertical white sheet or tarp. The insects, like moths and beetles, will be drawn to the light and land on the white sheet next to it. The sheets allow you to then see the insect at night and collect it.
