Craft Time: Ocean in a Jar

Ocean in a Jar

You will need:

• Empty & clean clear jar with lid
• Filtered water
• Vegetable or baby oil
• Blue food coloring
• Seashells, small rocks, plastic plants or sea animals
• hot glue (optional to seal the lid)

Directions:

1. Add rocks to empty jar.
2. Fill jar about 2/3 full with water.
3. Mix a drop of blue food coloring into water until desired color is reached.
4. Add seashells, plastic plants or sea animals.
5. Carefully fill the rest of the jar with oil.
6. Hot glue the lip of the lid & screw onto jar to seal, or screw lid on as tightly as possible without sealing.
7. Gently swirl to see the water flow & sea creatures swim. Discuss ocean biomes or how different densities & polarities keep the oil & water from mixing together.
